GENESSA -- HOW TO BECOME A WEBRING MANAGER!![]() There are three ways to become a ring manager. One is to create a ring. Another is to buy one in WebRing Auctions, either by bidding or by using BUY NOW. The third is to be the lucky recipient of a transfer from someone who no longer wants to manage a ring and has no interest in auctioning the ring off. Such a person might give you the ring outright, or sell it to you for points, cash or whatever you agree upon. To create a ring, first make sure the ring you intend to create is needed. There is no point in creating a ring that duplicates, in intent and content, an already-existing ring. If your ring is going to be more specific than, or have a different focus from, an existing ring, go for it. Here is how to check for existing rings and create your own: Go to the WebRing directory and find the general category of the ring you have in mind, and drill down to the specific subcategories into which it would fit. If you've assured yourself a new ring on this topic really needs to exist, click CREATE A RING. You will need to give the ring a name and a description, and you'll be asked for a URL, as you must have a page of your own to submit to it, so be sure you do! You will then be offered a chance to invite others to join your ring. Since you will not be allowed to keep the ring indefinitely with under three members, you should do this! Keep in mind that you may not create a WebRing if you have failing/timing out code for any of your pages, or if you manage what WebRing deems too many small (four members or fewer) rings. The reasoning here is you should build up what you have before taking on any more. To adopt a ring from auctions, click on Auctions not in the center toolbar but on the one at the bottom of the page. Either type a keyword into the Auction search bar or click on WebRings, which is the only category, and drill down to the category of your choice. A search will bring up results in seemingly random order, but drilling down will bring up results in chronological order. Find an auction on which you wish to bid. The minimum amount and the BUY NOW amount will both be shown; the reserve is somewhere in between. If you buy a ring using BUY NOW, the number of points needed to buy the ring will be deducted from your points, and if you are short of the needed number of points, then the rest will be deducted from your cash balance. Points are taken first, then cash. If you bid on the ring, you may be outbid, or you may win, or you may have the highest bid but not win because you did not meet the reserve (you will know whether you did or not immediately upon placing the bid, so you can bid again). You will get an "outbid" notice every time you outbid yourself on the ring. This is annoying because it doesn't say the outbidder is you. So remember what you bid! The third way to become a WebRing Manager, acquiring one privately from someone who gives or sellers you a ring, is not something upon which you can count but you can always keep your eyes and ears open. Remember, nobody likes a beggar. Don't go about asking people to give you rings. Also don't accept rings in which you have no interest, or which you feel you cannot manage. It is better to manage a few well than neglect many. BACK TO WEBRINGS MANAGED BY GENESSA![]() ![]() |
