Railroad Bailout May Offer a Model for Detroit .By LOUIS UCHITELLE
Published: March 15, 2009
As General Motors and Chrysler struggle to remain solvent, the railroad bailout of a generation ago could offer a template to the Obama administration — one in which the federal government would run the auto companies until they are back on their feet.

Dayton Union Railway Company
Erie Lackawanna Railway Company
Ironton Railroad Company
Lehigh and Hudson River Railway Company
Lehigh and New England Railway Company

What companies made it to Conrail and what didn't?
The major railroads that formed Conrail in 1976 didn't merge
in ALL their properties. Conrail didn't want them!
Most of the shortline's and small railroads that went
into CR did so because they were subsidiaries of the big lines that were being
included. With the creation of CR there was no longer any reason to
justify retaining the seperate corporations which were often
retained for tax and insurance purposes with the railroads being
operationally just another piece of their parent.
Best example I can find in the New York & Harlem Railroad. It stayed with Penn Central. All its active railroad properties had been leased to the New York Central Railroad in the 19th Century. Yes, this LEASE went to Conrail, but the New York & Harlem stayed with Penn Central. Even today, the New York & Harlem is a significant landowner. It even owns Grand Central Terminal!
I have located the companies as of 1976, from FreeDictionary and attempted to show what went to Conrail, and what didn't.

ec-bp.com The Forum for Supply Chain Integration
ec-bp was established in 2005 as the advocate for lowering the barriers to the adoption of EDI, and our email newsletter has been published every month since that time. Our focus has expanded beyond EDI to encompas the full gamut of supply chain practices and technologies. In addition, our readership has grown to become the largest of any similarly focused publication, and has expanded to include more than 90,000 professionals involved in nearly every aspect of the supply chain.
Today’s supply chain is more than simple transport of EDI documents. The complexity of maintaining compliance with trading partners, managing the ever increasing amount of data, and analyzing that data to drive constant improvement in processes and service take supply chain professionals far beyond the basics of mapping EDI documents.

|Driving north from New Haven, Cedar Hill yard cannot be overlooked. Its still used, but not to the extent it was 50 year ago. Imagine, over 9,000 cars handled on one day! Cedar Hill was built between 1910 and 1920. Cedar Hill became in the 1920's the keystone of the whole New Haven Railroad freight operation. It seems to have started out as a more local facility, then grown into that larger role. Or was the idea of making it the center part of the original intention?|
We are working on our list of Golf Hotels and Resorts
Some of these are well known because of PGA Tour events held there. Pinehurst; The Greenbrier; and Pebble Beach certainly belong in this catagory. Others are located in towns with even more than golf as an attraction. In this Category is The Otesaga in Cooperstown, New York; Basin Harbor Club on Lake Champlain.
New York Central Branch from DeKalk Junction to Ogdensburg, In 1861, the Potsdam & Watertown line merged into the Watertown&Rome, the name of the new railroad was changed to Rome, Watertown&Ogdensburg, and a 19-mile line built from DeKalb Junction to Ogdensburg. It lasted until the 1980's. Read the whole story.

Another transfer to Conrail was the Niagara Junction
After absorption by Conrail it wasn't too long before electric operation ceased, with three of the ex-Niagara Junction units going to Metro-North. Pantographs were removed and replaced with third-rail shoes.

|The Richfield Springs branch of the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railway extended through Bridgewater, where it connected with the Unadilla Valley Railroad, a shortline that served Edmeston and New Berlin, to Richfield Springs on Canadarago Lake, once a rather fashionable resort. Here, from 1905 until 1940, the DL&W had a passenger and freight connection with the Southern New York Railway, an interurban to Oneonta. Milk and light freight were the chief sources of revenue on this branch. Delaware Otsego subsidiary Central New York Railroad acquired this branch from Richfield Jct. to Richfield Springs, 22 miles, in 1973. Enginehouse was at Richfield Springs. Became part of NYS&W northern division after NYS&W bought the DL&W Syracuse & Utica branches from Conrail in 1982. Traffic on line gradually dropped off. Line east from Bridgewater embargoed in 1990. Abandoned and track removed in 1995, westerly 2-3 miles left in place for stone trains. In 2009: This old railroad is now owned by the Utica, Chenango and Susquehanna Valley LLC in Richfield Springs. They also own the 1930 Newark Milk and Cream Company creamery in South Columbia.|
Traveling in Europe?
Several years ago I wrote a story on the major railroads of 1950 and what happened to them.
Now I am following up with a closer examination of the New York Central Railroad. This railroad only lasted until 1968 when it merged into Penn Central.
But, what was the NY Central Railroad like in 1950?
