"Foods To Try After Surgery"

"Foods to Avoid"
-See Bottom of Page-

PLEASE READ
Everyone is different and we are all individuals.  Some of the foods in the top list might not be for you.
This is just a guide to help you as you start out eating after your surgery and not to be taken as gospel or a "have to do list.".
Try and eat anything that has protein.  This is very important.  Also if you are to eat pureed foods please make sure you
puree fully with no chunky pieces of the food in the puree.
You don't want anything to get stuck
!

Refried Beans
...High in protein...I found that "Old El Paso No Fat Refried Beans" tasted the best and are great with Salsa.

Salsa

Sharp Cheddar Cheese
(the sharper the less you'll use) high protein but also high in fat.  Try the Fat Free variety of cheese's some are really good.

Eggs/Egg Beate
rs...high in protein.  Eggland's Best Eggs are great and lower in cholesterol.

Cream of Wheat, Oatmeal, Cream of Rice Cereal

Cream Soups:  Like Tomato, Cream of Chicken, Cream of Mushroom.

Canned Tuna
...great source of protein

Soda Crackers

Spinach
...good source of IRON...very important

Mashed Potatos

Banana's:
Careful  they have sugar.  See bottom of page

Cottage Cheese
(low-fat or fat free) high in protein

Canned Peaches, or Pears
(no sugar)

Try some Chicken, Beef or Pork
.  Make sure that the  meat isn't dry and, I can't stress this enough...Be sure to "Puree" it until it's like mush.  Add a little store brought gravy on top  and heat in the micowave for about 15 to 25 seconds.

Canned Green Beans, or Peas.

Steamed Cauliflower
with margarine or just a little cheese.  this tasted especially good.  Be sure to puree it if you need to.

Sugar Free Jell-o

Applesauce (Natural)
You can add some sweetner and spices yourself to it you don't like plain applesauce.

Sugar Free Crystal Light, Diet Snapple,  Kool-Aid, Sugar-Free Popicles  -
drinks can be sweetened with your sweetener of choice.

"FOODS TO AVOID:"

RAW CELERY: THE STRINGS WILL BLOCK THE OPENING OF YOUR POUCH.  Cooked Celery is okay.

ANY RAW VEGETABLES OR FRUITS WITH A THIN SKIN LIKE: GRAPES, APPLES, PEARS, ONIONS, ETC.

THE PEELS WILL BLOCK THE POUCH TOO.  YOU CAN EAT THEM IF YOU PEEL THEM FIRST.
BE SURE TO
"PUREE" THE MORE DENSER FRUITS IF YOU NEED TO..

SUGAR

IT WILL MAKE YOU FEEL VERY SICK TO YOUR STOMACH, YOU'LL SWEAT, FEEL VARIOUS DEGREES OF DIZZINESS AND HAVE TO LIE DOWN.
THIS IS CALLED
"DUMPING".
ANY FOOD HAVING SUGAR LISTED IN THE FIRST 3 INGREDIENTS WILL USUALLY  MAKE YOU "DUMP".

CARBONATED BEVERAGES OF ANY KIND:  SODA POP, BEER, SPARKLING WINES

THEY WILL STRETCH THE POUCH OR POP YOUR STAPLES OR STITCHES.
PAINFUL THOUGHT!!

SOME BREADS

NOT ALL, JUST SOME THAT ARE VERY SOFT.
TORTILLAS COULD CAUSE TROUBLE BUT NOT FOR EVERYONE.  SOFT BREADS TEND TO "BALL UP" AND CAUSE DISTRESS IN YOUR TUMMY.  PLUS THEY TAKE UP ROOM THAT CAN BE USED FOR SOMETHING BETTER LIKE PROTEIN.

IF YOU HAVE DOUBTS ABOUT THE FOOD YOU ARE ABOUT TO EAT...
"DON'T EAT IT".
FIND SOMETHING ELSE THAT YOU KNOW IS BETTER FOR YOU
AND WILL GO DOWN EASY
